I would look at shrubs that are native to your area, and use wide mulch/scaping so you have less mowing the grass. You could use a couple containers for annual color, some architectural interest, and you would be finished. When laying mulch for new areas, make sure you spray weed killer first, and then put the plastic down, then plant, then mulch. You will not need to weed or very little. I don’t week, I just spray weed killer on the weeds.

You can find a designer in your area at, which is the website of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. While predrawn plans can provide with a low-cost alternative, they are sometime difficult to resize for your lot in order to make the scale correct.

Dwarf varieties of trees & small shrubs are low maintenance & really can give you garden structure. Small, low-growing evergreens look great behind smaller shrubs:
A colorful weeping Japanese Maple looks great all year & is especially nice with spring bulbs planted under it: (you can do the same with a Paperbark Birch):

This site lists plants for sunny positions & for shady conditions, to give you an idea of what kind of plants you can use in different areas. For example, rhododendrons, azaleas, & ferns are low maintenance plants for shady areas:

Thought you might get some ideas from ‘Just Gardeners’ gallery of forum users’s own photos. The Japanese Maple (Acer Tree ) & Berberis -Rosy Dawn shrub really contrast well with the other greenery (scroll down page):

Good luck!!! Hope this is helpful.
