I am trying to grow bamboo along the wall to block out the apartment building next door, but that will take years and I’m not sure how that will mix with water saving plants and I want grass or something like that. Is that all possible?

it is possible, but before you plant bamboo against a wall, make sure it is the kind that does not spread from the roots or it will be all over your yard and will undermine the wall. there is a great assortment of plants you can choose from that do not take a lot of water, also you can cut your water down by keeping a good layer of mulch down around your plants. 3″ minimum and in dry climates like AZ 6″ is recommended to cut water consumption by as much as 50%

            Hi:
I am a landscape and designer. One of the first things you will want to decide on is how many beds you want and how to prepare them and whrere to place them. You could incorporate grass in a defined area of the backyard. You can also make a mass bed bordering the entire backyard property. Creating evergreen trees and shrubs and mixing them with colorful ornamental shrubs would be a great addition for you.

I will direct you to my site map on my website and you can browse through all the different topics including the plan - prep and plant method. I will also direct you to my examples of landscape designs so you can see some of the backyard designs. I just did a base design for a client which included a full bed around the backyard as well as a berm area.
Please feel free to contact me if you have anymore questions. Good luck to you and have a great day!

I would choose plants that good at xeriscaping. These plants require very little water. There’s lots of information on the internet about the choice of plants.

As for the bamboo, pixieotr is correct, the underground roots are out-of-control. My mum planted her bamboo still in its pot and it’s been fine.
